1. Content

After the discussion, our group decided to concentrate on wave, and leave the moon aspect aside. For the wave visualization, we discussed about accuracy vs. aesthetics. We would like to create either an abstract yet accurate visualization using XML & ActionScript or Processing, or less accurate but more natural looking movie clip using After Effects. We also discussed about using MAX MSP since audio is an important aspect of the project.

- extension cord

3. Location

We have created a press release to distribute to different galleries and corporate spaces. Ideally we see this piece working best in the lobby of an office building, but considering the time constraints, we are still open to gallery space.

The following are two early prototypes of the technical processing "look and feel" of the project.

We will use processing to visualize the tide datat gathered from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association from the Battery station at the bottom of Manhattan.

Visual Interface

These are images for the the visual interface of our installation.

The current approach is to show a lighter, thinner color for a low tide and a darker thicker color for high tide. We may change this to show the difference in time where the lighter lines signify a tide that has passed.

Mr. Schumacher demonstrates the airflow movement in the ventilation gap behind brick cladding using smoke and lasers flow visualization and it's kind of trippy. There will eventually be a commentary to go along with the video footage, but it won't be finished until after his thesis is finished, so who knows when that will happen.

Initial ideas

1) Urban Flow
The objective is to reconnect urban dwellers with
the natural environment, specifically tides, and
provide users a peaceful, emotional experience.
This project will also bring a light to environmental
disconnection felt by urban dwellers. In an effort to
bring the natural environment back into the lives of
city folk, we would create a digital or actual tidal
pool. The tide would ebb and flow based on low
and high ocean tides surrounding New York City.

2) Sede Naturale
Inspired to bring natural environments to dense
urban areas, benchworks, aims to reconnect users
to the “feel” of the outdoors by bringing it to indoor
objects. The project invites users to experience
natural textures in a new form, the chair, that
brings new perspective often overlooked, ordinary
textures.

Each bench will be covered in a different natural
material ranging from bark to river rocks to grass.
Interaction with each individual bench encourages
deeper inspection of the natural material covering
it providing a tactile, sensory experience.
